#2 Sergei Samus(Serega to friends): I do not know why blinkers are not crazy about this but it really shows how hard this sport is!!

Very dynamic shot. Drops make it a powerful scene.

I went on holiday to Hayling Island as a child. Very pretty place. The light & the water spray add drama to this action shot.

#4 Tim Pereira(Cooney ): it's not that they don't like the shots, it's that people are not always sure how to judge them.

Say, we all know what a good landscape or wild life shot is thanks to thousands of photos we've seen and compared to each other. It also helps that we have tried to produce similar stuff and we know exactly the amount of effort involved and can appreciate all the aspects of taking a known type of photos.

When other type of less known photos come alone we don't have enough experience to come to a certain opinion. For example, only after we learn on what is involved in taking a good underwater photo we can appreciate things that come for granted in other areas - sharpness, clarity and color. Only if we try to take a panning shot, after hundreds of disappointing attempts we can appreciate a good panning photo that would not appeal to us prior to our attempt, etc, etc.

Apart of the awareness of the technique, for highly specific photos there is an awareness of the subject. Sailing photos might appeal to us as photographers who appreciate light and composition, but would be discarded by sailors who'd see a bad rig settings or lousy technique ;o).

So being aware of most of these factors Tania and I just hope to gradually build an appreciation of the sport and sailing photography among PB community

#8 Sergei Samus(Serega to friends): You are right, I think some of us do not know what it takes to take a pic like this.

Funny you talked about underwater photos. I live in South Florida and looked into buying some underwater equipment. My god, I was floored on how much it cost(well, good equipment). I really have a appreciate underwater photos.

I also think night/stage shot are the same way. I have taken alot of stage shot and boy, I have gone through a lot of shot before I "THINK" I have gotten it right. For 6 months, I took pics of my girls at Basketball game, Plays, and other recital, playing around with the settings of my camera until the pics started coming out good. It was alot of fun learning how to take those pics...

I believe this one really captures the intensity of this exciting action quite well Serega, I like the tight framing, the spray of the water, and the bits of view of the sailers in the background through the rigging!
11 KAY (........ .......)   (9/19/2007 9:59:31 AM)
I like what George said...I am sure it takes lots of strength to handle this situation but loads of fun too...

#11 KAY(Wax On...... Wax Off.......): indeed, that day it was blowing quite hard, especially for these types of boats (skiffs). At points they were all over the place. Here is one that mounted a buoy. There were sitting there for an hour. Ended up with the whole top ripped off. :o(

The buoy is a gate mark. In this extreme corse that lasts for less than 15 minutes (normally it takes 1-2 hours) they have to pass narrow gates that creates a big traffic and a lot of collisions.

#12 Sergei Samus(Serega to friends): oh no! a position everyone hopes NOT to find themselves in for sure!
15 KAY (........ .......)   (9/19/2007 10:15:31 AM)
OH MY! That's the real thrill of victory and agony of defeat...mother nature is so powerful....
I only been out in a sailboat once here, got to the far side of the lake and the wind quit blowing...that's when them moters come in handy..lol! but sail boats here are for just relaxation, slow paced... we have power boat racing here, I may go after some shots this coming year, more sports images would be nice to see here... tks for the example

love the color and action. The water drops are great! the Atlantic took our Hobie once and sent it into the rocks..just ripped the sails and broke a few batons..was pretty scary. We stay in the gulf now :)
