title Forest Shadow - Black Wolf
date1/31/2004 4:23:20 PM
detailsphotographed in the wild, in northern Ontario Canada, this black wolf proved to be one of my more challenging images to take. This particular animal is the lowest ranking member of the pack. Biologists refer to him as the omega wolf. Lacking social status and being a wolf which every other member of the pack chooses to pick on makes him extremely skittish and difficult to approach. His black fur and the forest setting made for a challenging exposure. Nikon F3, Nikon 400mm f 3.5, Kodak royal gold 100, 1/125 f 5.6, tripod.Greg Governale

Watching specials about wolves I feel for this one, they all take out their frustrations on him, any how Greg sharp, great pose, wonderful background, the oof downed tree or bolder adds depth to the photo, well done. Chip

Magnificient capture Greg! I envy your excursions and your work with biologists. A rare animal captured in a fantastic way. The 400mm f/3.5 is a superlative lens. Wish I could use mine with my new Canon. Alas. Best regards, Bill

I cannot find any original adjectives so I'll sum them all: Outstanding! Magnificent! Fantastic! Superb!
Colour separation is remarkable. Appart from the difficulty you described (being the omega wolf in the pack) it must have been also difficult to find a convenient setting as the background in a forest tends to be dark.
#6 Lockhart: back to Canon?

It's an incredable shot again. And 400mm, 1/125, 3.5 is very impressive!

I appreciate all of the comments. Once the biologists explained to me how the omega wolf behaved. I began to understand how I might get into a position for an image. Choosing the edge of the forest would allow the most light to be on my subject. I positioned myself and waited and waited..... 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Three pictures for the entire day.

Well you certainly are the master of these images Greg, your patience, persistance and understanding are all major contributors to your success. You probably would have pulled it off with one picture for the entire day.
15 Greg (Greg Governale)   (1/31/2004 9:59:43 PM)
Chantal, I appreciate the compliment. The truth is, I still make a lot of mistakes. Two out of the three images turned out fairly good. The third one no one will get to see. I don't throw away my losers, ( I keep them as a reminder and a learning tool) I try not to share my bad images with other people. I really do have a lot of them. Greg Governale
16 Chantal   (1/31/2004 10:08:46 PM)
I'd probably be thrilled to have taken one like your bad ones!

Greg, you're patience astounds me. I don't have any. That is one of my biggest faults. I want what I want NOW!! I admire both your photographic talent, and your patience. I'm grateful that you share you're art here. Thank you. Take care. Barb.

Barbara, thanks, patience is frequently rewarded. What good is taking images if you don't share them? Greg Governale

32 LindaY (Plant Paparazzi)     (2/1/2004 7:05:25 PM)
Super shot, Greg. The details in the black fur are marvelous, particularly against the background of red fall foliage. The thing I notice about this one is those piercing yellow eyes surrounded by the black fur. As always, I find your commentary interesting and educational too. Excellent image!

This is a great job.Love the colors in the b/g.It makes the lone wolf pop out .He does seem to have a sad look in his eyes or am I reading to much into this.I do that some times.I tend to be overly emotional at times but I think he is sad.Love this one, great job.Diane
38 gdanger (George Dangerfield)     (2/3/2004 12:19:07 AM)
They don't get much better than this first rate wildlife capture Greg, perfect handling of this difficult exposure, razor sharp detail and I especially love the colorful background that the fall foliage provides! At first I was thinking about the branch over it's head, and how easy it would be to remove, but I decided I would refrain from such a change if it was mine because it adds a feeling for it's environment.
39 Greg (Greg Governale)   (2/3/2004 12:42:40 PM)
George,I actually did remove that branch at one time. After thinking about it and looking at the two images I decided to leave it the way I originally shot it. Thank you for the wonderful comment. Greg Governale
