title The Painted Desert
date10/25/2002 2:49:59 AM
detailsNo Photoshop! A "Light Painted" long exposure image taken in Saguaro National Monument West on October 19th, 2002 about an hour after sunset. I used 5 separate flashlights gelled with different colored filters to literally "paint" the cactus with light. The streaks visible in the sky are star trails and clouds smeared during the 12 minute and 27 second exposure. Background illumination courtesy of the nearly Full Moon. Canon EOS D60 | 17-35mm F/2.8L @ 17mm and f/7.1 | ISO 100.

If I read the rules correctly, it does state in #4 No filter effects. The color manipulation is more than obvious, and not natural in my opinoin.

I'm in the stream, not the contest, and I think this is an incredible piece of work! This is the kind of image that demonstrates how important the process is when evaluating an image. Done in PS, this would be mediocre. Done "by hand" it is a huge work or creativity and beauty. How did you see to dance around while painting?

I think the appropriate word is "fantastic," David. If I didn't know you, I wouldn't believe it. Superb work. And why can't I vote in the contest?
19 Adam B   (11/4/2002 1:04:18 PM)
Truly Remarkable! 10
20 Richard Nowak   (11/13/2002 3:33:21 PM)
I agree with 14 and disagree with 7. Would this be any better if David were blind using pen lights?
