An Anole

| details | Antiguan Anole. Three species of anolis lizards were introduced to Bermuda in 1905 to control fruit flies. In the 1940's, the cedar scale insect got onto the island and started decimating the endemic Bermuda cedar tree. To control that they introduced ladybirds/bugs, but the lizards ate them before they could do their job. So, in 1957 they then introduced the kiskadee (my previous post: http://www.photoblink.com/imageview.asp?imageid=247547) to eat the lizards. They in turn eat just about anything, including the endemic and endangered Bermuda skink, and also bluebird eggs, massively reducing both populations. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, I guess... |
