title METEORA MONASTERY
date8/2/2007 12:09:10 AM
detailsMonastery in the region of Meteora in Central Greece.
These huge monoliths are a very rare geological phenomenon.
During the period between 11th and 14th century on the top of these rocks were built 24 monasteries, in order to be protected from the bandits and pirates.
Today only 6 of them remain renovated in the region, while the rest are abandoned and ruined.

The only access to them was either by a movable wooden bridge (as seen in the left side of the image), or by a big basket coming up and down by a winch mechanism manipulated by the monks on top.
Today you can visit some of them. It is an unforgettable experience.

In my #1 example image you can see another one of these monasteries.

This is fantastic shot of unusual and so specific place on our planet. I always wanted to go there and see it alive. Thank you for sharing this one of the mst beautiful monuments on the world with us, and for story about Meteora M. too.

It is not easy explain how monks managed to build these pearls of the Orthodox medeval architecture having only stones, ropes, wood and their iron will. This is a spectacular shot with wonderful composition, great rock texture mixed with some rare foliage. Stunning entry, Karolos, Thanks for sharing it with us.
5 Vovec   (8/2/2007 2:21:17 AM)
It's very beautiful, excellent shot and place!

Both images are outstanding Karolos, you could have posted them separately.
You have captured the bold relief of the rocks very well. I also like the POV and composition that nicely accentuates the breathtaking height.
The human silhouette in the balcony adds to the image the important element of scale.
I admire your ease to pass from portraits to landscapes and then to macros etc.
I hope I am in a good way towards this target, what do you think ? LOL. Best regards Elli.

#9 ELLI DIMITRIOU: I agree with Elli ~ the example image should be posted another day to get it's full merit and attention ~ they make a lovely set
11 David Foster   (8/2/2007 4:48:28 AM)
I like the idea of the big basket ~ i wonder are the monks allowed to participate in photography and what their view out on this scene would be ~ fascinating to ponder

This is the best picture today and not just today, maybe on this site. I am glad that you represented to the world ,for many people unknown, unusual monosteries that are situated in Meteora.
23 Gaga (Dragan Babovic)   (8/2/2007 9:42:27 AM)
I think that that rocks hre are those monastries are in the sea, and it will be good if you have some example image with sea down.

25 Christopher Azzopardi   (8/2/2007 10:27:34 AM)
It is unbelievable how they managed to build these monasteries in those days. I think even nowadays it will be a big challenge to build such a building, let alone in those days. Well done!

#10 David Foster:
Dear Elli and David, I thank you for your advice to post my two images separately in different days, but I always avoid to post in the site similar images, regardless how interesting they are.
Also David, concerning the possibility of photographing the monks, in fact it is very limited.

#20 Connie Gordon:
Dear Connie, I have some more photos from this place (and some from inside the monasteries), but unfortunately they are in slides and not digital. I hope to find the time to scan them.

Many thanks for your interest and kind comments concerning my Meteora images.
I frankly believe that their strong point is their unique subject.
I wish all of you to be able to visit these magnificent monuments.
If you are interested, I attach here a link in English, concerning this place, is not so good but it is the only I found :

I have to apologize again for the very little time I can be in the site during my working day, I am trying hard to be here at least late at night.

Dear Dragan, the region of Meteora is far away from the sea, I suppose that you have in mind the other magnificent autonomous monastic state of Agion Oros in Athos mountain.

Karolos, please forgive me for commenting so late on this image. I have also been really busy during the day and sometimes into the evening at the office. This photo is really stunning. I have seen other photographs of this monastery in my guidebooks on Greece, but I do not believe that any show the beauty and drama quite so well as yours. I will not be able to visit Meteora on my trip this fall, but do have one of the Greek Monasteries on my agenda when I am there. I will be visiting the monastery in Paleokastritsa on Corfu while I am there. Again, fabulous image.
47 gdanger (George Dangerfield)     (10/13/2007 12:12:34 PM)
A fascinating view of this old monastery Karolos, hard to believe they could build such a structure here, a very nice composition! I visited Greece in 1972 and was fortunate to see many of these monasteries, including on the island of Mt. Athos, would love to return some day!

Wonderful picture, Karolos. I viseted three of the Meteora monasteries many years ago: it's an impressive panorama and your shots gives me the right idea of what they are. Oof,now I'll have to fight with the nostalgia of your beautiful country...
